There are specially trained people who are available to meet you and talk to you. They have a lot of experience with other young people like yourself and they will listen carefully to what you say and try to help you understand your difficult feelings. This can feel like a huge relief and can make your experience more tolerable.
Depending on where you are being treated, there are different resources available. Some centres have a psychologist or psychotherapist on their team, while others will know where you can be referred for psychological help. Sometimes it only takes one meeting to uncover what is worrying you and to help you move on with less upset.
Sometimes the therapist will see you regularly if it is what you want.
In some units there is a patients’ group, led by a nurse or psychotherapist or both, where you can discuss your worries with others who have similar concerns and questions. Sometimes it is easier to discuss your difficult feelings with people who are not part of your family.
