In most children's hospitals and teenage units, there is a school or tuition unit with teachers who provide education for the children and young people on the wards, as well as home tuition. All of these teachers are qualified primary or secondary teachers and most of them have had experience working in mainstream schools or colleges. Hospital teachers will be able to help you continue with your education.
how they can help:
- They can contact your school to let them know what is happening - provided you give them permission to do this.
- They will liaise with your named link teacher (often your head of year or form tutor) and arrange for work from school to be sent home or to the hospital.
- They will help you with your schoolwork while you are in hospital. Most often, this will be work you have from school, but they will also have plenty of resources in the hospital to provide you with work as well.
- They will liaise with your local educational authority and help set up home tuition as required.
- They will help arrange 'special consideration' for external exams.
- They will generally work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with health colleagues and other professionals to ensure they have the most up-to-date and relevant information about your treatment.
