lonely

isolated, on my own

Cancer in young people is uncommon. To meet other people who have been through it can be difficult. Even if you do meet others who have had cancer, they may not have had the same type as you. It can be difficult for friends and family to really know what it is like to have cancer if they haven't actually been through it. This can make you feel lonely and as if no one understands what you are going through. Also, it is worth remembering your friends may be frightened by the news of your illness and not know how best to respond.

what can help

  • Some find sharing how they feel helps - even if the people you talk to don't understand exactly, they will be able to listen.
  • Talk to people at the hospital where you are being treated, or have a look in other stuff for organisations that provide ways of contacting other teenagers in a similar experiences. For example, the Teenage Cancer Trust and HAWC.
  • Have a look in helping yourself for more ideas.
