Infections can usually be treated really well with antibiotics, especially if the infection is picked up early. For this reason it’s important to check your temperature regularly and to contact your hospital straight away if:
- your temperature goes above 38°C
- you suddenly feel unwell even with a normal temperature
Other things you should look out for are:
- Chills and sweating
- Mouth sores and ulcers are not a sign of infection but they can very easily get infected. Look out for white patches inside your mouth or crusty sores on your lips.
- Coughs, colds or sore throat
- Redness or swelling around sores on the skin
- Unusual rashes
- Painful lumps, bumps and swellings
- Diarrhoea
- A burning feeling when you pass urine
- Unusual vaginal discharge or itching
These are signs of a possible infection and you might need antibiotics. Your nurses will keep a close eye on you and it's very important that you let them know if you notice any changes. If you are at home, let your GP know or call the ward if you notice any of those things.
