When you have mouth sores or a dry mouth, you are more likely to get infections in your mouth. It is very important that you use any medicated mouthwashes and lozenges that you are prescribed because these help to cut down your risk of infections.

You should let your doctor know if you think you might have any of the following infections:

  • Bacterial  These are the most common types of infection. You will not be able to see any signs of the infection in your mouth but if you get a temperature of 38ºC or above then you should call the hospital because you might need antibiotics.
  • Fungal  This is what is sometimes called oral thrush. You may have white patches in your mouth that can spread to your throat and make it painful and difficult to swallow.
  • Viral  Cold sores are a type of viral infection. They appear as blisters or dark crusts in the corners of your mouth. You can get cold sores even if you don’t have mucositis.
