When someone in your family has cancer, there can be a lot of changes for everyone. These changes can be big or small and affect you in different ways.

everyone reacts differently

Each person reacts in their own way when someone in the family has cancer. Some people go on as if nothing has happened. Others behave or act differently from before. You may notice changes in their mood. They may be worried, scared or angry. Your parents might be tired if they’re going to the hospital regularly. They might also be finding it hard to sleep if they are worried.

routines can change

Routines in your home can change too. Your parents might need some extra help around the house and ask you to help with things that you wouldn’t normally do. If you have younger brothers or sisters you may be asked to look after them sometimes. If you’re not old enough, your parents might arrange for other members of the family to help look after all of you at times. You can feel that your whole life is being turned upside down. As well as worrying about your brother or sister, you might also be missing your parents. Being apart from your family can be hard to deal with.

it can feel really unfair

It might not be possible to do much together as a family when your brother or sister is sick. It can feel really unfair that you’re missing out on things because they’re sick. The changes in a family can be difficult for everyone. It’s important to remember that these changes are not forever.
