Your friend will have lots of feelings they might not understand. They may be feeling isolated and lonely when they’re in hospital. Most young people want their friends around, even if visits are short. There may be times when they don’t feel well enough for visitors. It might be that they’re in hospital some distance away and you’re not able to visit. If you can’t visit, you could keep in touch by phone or text. Some hospitals have laptops so you could use email, bebo or facebook to keep in touch.
keep them involved with whatever's going on
Your friend might not feel like doing all the usual stuff with you for a while. But don’t assume that they don’t want to be included or invited out. It can be a good idea to think of different ways to keep them involved.
keep them up to date with school or college
It can be good to keep them up to date with what’s going on at school or college - so they still feel part of things even if they’re not there. If others are asking after them, remember to tell them so they know they’re not being left out.
their mood can change but you shouldn't
Try to understand if their mood is different or if they don’t want to talk at times. It doesn’t mean they’re mad at you.
There’s no right or wrong thing to do. Just go with what feels right for you both.
