what is it?

Disability living allowance is for people who need help looking after themselves, or who need help getting around because of walking problems.

who can get it?

You can get DLA because of your illness or disability if:

  • You need help to cook, or you find things like washing or dressing more difficult.
  • You need someone to keep an eye on you to make sure you are safe.
  • You have problems walking when you are outdoors or indoors.

To be able to get it, you must have needed help for 3 months and be expected to need it for at least another 6 months.  For people who have more serious or advanced illness, you don’t need to wait the 3 months to claim it. This is called special rules. To claim in this way, you need to ask your doctor to complete a DS1500 report to send in with your claim.

anything else I should know?

There are two parts to the benefit:

  • The care component is paid at three levels: high, middle or low.
  • The mobility component is paid at two levels: high or low.

DLA is not a means tested benefit which means that it is not affected by any savings or other income that you may receive.  It is worth knowing as well that you may be able to receive it even if you are working.

Your parent can also apply on your behalf under the same conditions as above.

how to claim

Staff at your treatment centre may be able to help you with your application. If not, you can get a claim form from your nearest DWP office. Look for the DWP or Benefits Agency display advert in the Business section of the telephone book or call the benefit enquiry line on 0800 882200. Ask for a DLA claim pack.
