Before treatment starts, it’s hard to know how it’s going to affect you. It can help to let your boss know this as you might need to change your work plans at short notice.

Often, the biggest concern is about not being paid and losing money. Whether or not you’ll be paid while you’re away will depend on the terms and conditions in your contract. Go through your contract to make sure you know what you are entitled to.  It can help to talk to the Human Resources department at work, a trade union representative or if you work in a big company – the occupational health nurse. They can explain the contract to you.

It’s also worth talking these issues through with your medical team before treatment begins so they can advise you where to get the best help. Ask to see the hospital social worker who can also give you advice and support.
