When girls or young women go through stressful situations such as serious illness, it can affect their periods – the periods may:
- become irregular
- stop altogether for a time and then restart
- stop and not restart at all.
Any sexual problems which prevent you having intercourse may stop a pregnancy happening, even if you are still making healthy eggs or sperm.
Some types of cancer treatment may cause lasting damage to the heart or kidneys, which may make it risky for a woman to become pregnant.
