Continuing Chemo oct-dec

story added: 31/10/2007

Brunette (Germ cell tumours, 17, F, England)

I was allowed home in the middle of october. I had chemo every thursday while I was in hospital, it was alternate POMB which took hours, one of the bags was like 12 hours and a couple of times it went on through the night and then the nurses had to get me out of bed in the middle of the night and weigh me to see that I hadn't gained or lost weight. I was losing more hair every treatment and it was awful, my mum brushed my hair and she filled 3 bags, I would run my fingers through my hair and try and enjoy what I had left of it but it would just come out in my fingers. As I had been in bed so long, I hadn't walked for ages its like my legs had forgotten how to walk, so I had to practice walking around my hospital room, each day I improved so eventually I was able to walk around the ward and all the nurses cheered for me. I became very friendly with almost all the nurses, they were really nice and kind, they were all so helpful, some were so dedicated they stayed an extra hour or so to give the chemo to the patients. I remember the day I was allowed home, I had a big bag of paracetamol, iron tablets, stomach liner tablets, extra pain relief and lactose drink. My Dad said to me as I was walking out of hospital, "Where are you going Sam?" and I replied, "Im going home" I still couldn't believe I was walking out of the hospital, being stuck inside you think the world has stopped outside, we had a 70 mile drive home and my twin brothers of 13 Tom and Ben, my Grandma and Grandad were at my house waiting, I arrived home and recieved lots of hugs, I stared around at my living room and went upto my bedroom, I never really thought much of the living room before, it was just a room to sit in but now i was looking at all the pictures and fireplace and thinking about how it felt to be home. It worked that I would stay home for 10 days and then go in for chemo for 3 days. My mum is a hairdresser so she cut my hair to a bob length so it was easier to manage.
