Baseball saved my life.

Czabbb (Brain cancer, 17, M, United States)

I was playing a baseball game with my travel team. I was playing 2nd base when a kid hit a pop up in the air and i ran for it blocking the sun with my glove and when i moved my glove to catch the ball the sun blinded me and the ball hit me in the eye full force. My mom took me to the hospital to see if i needed stitches. After having the nurses look at it and putting ice on it the doctor came in and looked at it. He said i didn't need stitches and he cleaned it all up and left the room to get some paper work. As soon as he left i started vomiting. He came back and said he thinks i have a concussion and we are going to do a CAT scan. So i go and take the CAT scan and go back to my room. It took along time for the doctor to come back and talk to us but he finally came in and said you have a broken cheek bone and then he said something that took a shock to my mom and me. He said they found something abnormal in my brain. He said it could have been some blood vessals or even a brain tumor. At that point i broke down, i was scared out of my mind. I cried to my mom saying, "I'm only 15 i'm to young for brain surgery!" The doctor then suggested us to go to a neurologist. We go to the neurologist 2 days later and he said he doesn't really know what it and would need an MRI to see it more clearly but he also said he doesn't operate on children so he suggested us to a childrens hospital. I go and get an MRI a couple days later and then went to visit our new neurologist. He took a look at the MRI and said you indeed have a brain tumor. I was in complete shock. I had zero symptoms of this brain tumor, i was a perfectly healthy 15 year old kid. The tumor was located in the 3rd ventricular pretty much the center of my brain. I went into surgery July 28th. The surgery lasted 11 and half hours. My neurosurgeon got the whole tumor! I was so happy and overjoyed. I spent 10 days in ICU and was up and walking around the day i got out. But with all my happiness came a slap in the face. The pathology came back as a Malignant. At that point i was at a very positive state and said "You know what, whatever needs to be done needs to be done, i will get through this." The doctors told me my cancer was very rare. My tumor was about 90% mature Teratoma and about 10% Germinoma. The Germinoma was the cancer. The doctors were kinda shocked that it was Germinoma because that perticular cancer was usally found in testicular and ovarian. They talked to many other doctors around the nation and finally came up with a plan. I was to recieve 3 cycles of Chemotherapy and 3 weeks of Radation. I am currently going through Chemotherapy, i have finished the 1st cycle already. My experience with the 1st cycle wasn't to bad. I was really nauseous and was really tired, i just slept all day. I could barely eat and they had to put me on IV fluids because i just couldn't eat. By the time i got home acouple days later i started to eat more and getting back in to my old routine. I am currently being taught at school by tutors. I am not able to go to school till Janurary which is pretty much when i finish my radation. I am just really anxious to start baseball again. It's really hard for me to be just on the sidelines as i watch my friends play. I'm just ready for all of this to be done so i can get back to playing baseball and going to school.
