5 March 2010 - Be a social networking superstar

Hello again - I can't believe it's March already. I'm getting married in a month and am quietly panicking about how fast time flies!

Anyway, for those of you who love nothing more than doing a spot of internet surfing, don't forget we have TIC networking groups on both Facebook and Bebo. We'd love it if you'd stop by and say hello to connect with other young people affected by cancer.

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4397519221

Bebo: http://www.bebo.com/TiC7

And as ever, you can always chat on the TIC forums on this site.

4 February - It's World Cancer Day 2010

Hi TIC-ers,

Some of you may have noticed it's World Cancer Day today, run by the World Health Organisation.

So I'm asking you how you prefer to find out about cancer and its effects?

Do you want to know all of the facts about cancer upfront? Perhaps you find it easier to digest information via the internet? Or do you like to talk through your concerns over the phone or in person with others affected by cancer?

Remember if you want to talk through any aspect of cancer you can call Macmillan Cancer Support free on 0808 808 00 00.

Annie, TIC Editor

November 2009 update - Are you worried about swine flu?

Just to flag for your attention our latest blog from Laura, one of our cancer support specialists. Read her tips and information about swine flu and cancer and share any questions you have about them.

Thanks,

Annie, TIC editor

November 2009

Hi everyone,

Want to get your voice heard about cancer issues? Or maybe you're looking for something to add to your CV? Then perhaps you'll want to provide your thoughts to the Medikidz organisation.

It's looking for young people nationwide (aged 8-15 years) to become part of its testing group. This includes reviewing comic books and its website.

The Medikidz stories entertain and educate young people about medical issues using comic books, games and an online virtual world. (Medikidz are a gang of superheroes from outer space, who are each specialists in different parts of the body.)

Medikidz is especially interested in speaking with young people who may have experience of leukaemia, osteosarcoma or brain tumours.

If you’re interested in becoming a Medikidz reviewer please contact Alastair at feedback@medikidz.com

Thanks guys,

Annie (new TIC editor)

August 2009

Hope you're all having a good summer, with at least a glimpse of sunshine? You might not be planning to travel anywhere, especially if you're not feeling too well. But some people do take a holiday after or even during treatment, and if you're planning to there's some useful info in our deal with it section.

If you've had any travel experiences and want to share tips - or even just stories of your adventures - you can always start a chat on the forum...

June 2009

It seems like summer is really here, and we're having some beautiful days. One of the nurses who works at Macmillan Cancer Support has written a blog reminding people about how to take care in the sun, which is worth a look. Some cancers and their treatments can lead to an increased sensitivity to the sun, and there's specific information about that in deal with it.

We've also just added a new page which you'll see over on the left: cancer support specialist blogs. When there's something about cancer in the news, or an issue the nurses think it's important to talk about, they'll often write a blog on the Macmillan Cancer Support site. If any of these are really relevant to you guys, we'll put them up here too. June's was actually written a little while ago, following Jade Goody's death, so it's on the theme of losing someone you care about.

If you're interested to talk about anything it raises, you can always chat in the forums.

May 2009

We've moved! Most of the people who run this site are now working in a different office (with a view along the Thames to Big Ben - very nice!). The move has meant a little bit of upheaval, but we've sorted everything out now, and TIC should still be working fine.

Hope you're all getting a bit of a chance to enjoy the sunshine; though if you're at school, summer can also be a stressful time, with revision and exams happening just when you might want a bit of time to relax. There's some information on what to do if you're not well in our exams section, and there are some tips about how to prepare for and cope with exams on the Childline website. If you need any support with this - or anything else - do get in touch.

26th April 2009 - Flora London Marathon 2009

On Sunday, 700 amazing people will be running the London Marathon to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. A huge good luck to all of you from all of us.

If you’re not running, you can still take part by sponsoring someone or by coming along to cheer everyone on. You can download and print our cheering point map [pdf] so you know where to stand.

If you know anyone who's running, let us all know!

6th April 2009 - spring's here!

Here at Cancerbackup, we’re doing lots of work integrating the main Cancerbackup website with the Macmillan Cancer Support website. The idea is to create a place where people affected by cancer can find the best information and support. It’s a big project because there’s so much content – but hopefully once it’s finished it will be a really great resource for everyone. Until then, we're keeping all the information here  up-to-date, so do check it out!

I’m sure you’ll all have heard about Jade Goody’s funeral, which took place at the weekend. It's a sad event, and it's been in the news so much that it's hard to avoid. If this raises any questions, or anything you’d like to talk about, you can always get in touch and chat to a nurse.

3rd March 2009 - spring's coming!

This week I was in contact with someone who really needed support not because they had cancer, but because they had just lost their mum to it. TIC has always been aimed at teenagers who have cancer, and that’s what all the information is about, so it wasn’t  quite the right site for this person. I recommended Rip Rap, which is a site designed for people who have parent with cancer, or have lost a parent. I know some of you are here as friends because you know people with cancer, so maybe it could be useful to know that this site exists too. Of course, we don’t want you to leave TIC! But we do want to make sure you’re getting the support you need.

Keep an eye out for new users…

With Cancerbackup and Macmillan Cancer Support having merged, we’re linking two communities into one. That means that all the users from Share will be joining the TIC community. This is fantastic for TIC, as it means loads of new users, and therefore new stories and new connections to be made. It would be great if everyone already on TIC could make these guys feel really welcome. So, keep a look out for new profiles, leave them note, even become buddies. For all you new users from Share, don’t be shy about asking any questions you like. Just email the team and we’ll do what we can to help you.

TIC in 2009

Hello to everyone on TIC and welcome to the first blog post of 2009!

Firstly, I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Cassie, and i've just started working as an editor on TIC. I've spent the last couple of weeks roaming around the site, reading all the info, and thinking about what might change. The first thing i've done is to redevelop the Other Stuff section which is now called TIC it (like a ticket to other places - get it?). I hope the section is now a bit easier to use. I'm going to be doing the same with the rest of the site, so I hope you'll notice some improvements.

In other news, Cancerbackup - who produce TIC - have now merged with Macmillan Cancer Support. This means that we've got a lot more resources (and money!), so we should be able to develop this site really well. It might mean things changing a bit - but we'll let you know what's going on with that.

If you'd like to get in touch about anything you can email us.
