Sometimes cells break away from the original or ‘primary’ cancer and travel to other parts of our body.
They can do this in different ways:
- by spreading into an organ nearby
- through the bloodstream
- through the lymphatic system - our body’s natural defence mechanism.
When the cells reach a new area, they may keep dividing to form another tumour. This is often called a secondary cancer or a metastasis.
