CT (computerised tomography) scan

A series of special x-rays that build up a picture of the inside of the body. There is further information in tests and scans.

Cancer

A disease where the cells in our body grow out of control and develop into tumours.

Cannula

A thin plastic tube that goes into a vein in your arm or the back of your hand. It allows medication or fluid to be injected into your veins. There is more information in the chemotherapy section.

Carboplatin

A chemotherapy drug.

Carmustine (car mus teen)

A chemotherapy drug.

Cataract

A condition where the lens of the eye becomes impared, this can cause blurred vision. Cataracts can be treated with surgery.

Central line

A thin flexible tube inserted through the skin of the chest into a vein near the heart. Used to give intravenous medication and to take blood samples from. There is more information in the chemotherapy section.

Central nervous system

The brain and the spinal cord.

Cerebellum (seh re bell uum)

The back bit of the brain - and the second largest part after the cerebrum.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

The liquid that circulates around the central nervous system and protects our brain.

Cerebrum (seh reeb rum)

The biggest part of the brain, it's the grey, walnut-shaped bit at the top.

A chemotherapy drug.

Cytotoxic (sigh-toe-toch-sic)

Toxic or poisonous to cells; anti-cancer treatment.
