Sarcoma (sah coma)

A tumour which develops in the connective tissue of the body (like the muscles, bones, nerves, fat, and blood vessels).

Scrotum

The sac that holds the testicles.

Secondary cancer

Cancer that has spread from the original site (primary) to another part of the body.

Seminoma

A type of testicular cancer, which tends to affect older men.

Soft tissue

The body's supporting tissue, which includes muscle, blood vessels and cartilage.

Sperm banking

Collecting and storing sperm (which is frozen and kept in a sperm bank) for future use.

Stage or Staging

A term used by doctors to describe the size and position of a tumour.

Stem cells (also called peripheral blood stem cells)

Blood cells at their earliest stage of development in the bone marrow. They go on to become white cells, red cells or platelets.

Steroids

Drugs used in cancer treatment that have many different uses e.g to help control sickness, as part of the chemo regime and to reduce swelling and inflammation (in brain tumours).

Surgery

Cancer treatment which involves removing a tumour through an operation.

Synovial (si no vi al) sarcoma

A type of sarcoma which commonly affects teenagers and often develops around joints.
