Hospitals don't have enough private rooms for everybody who wants one. Sometimes you'll get a room on your own and other times you might share a ward with other patients. It depends on what treatment you’re having and whether any rooms are available. It can be good to have your own space but some people like being around other people for the company.
In most hospitals, single rooms are given to people who need to be on their own because they are too ill to be out on the open ward. This could mean that you're hardly ever in a single room and may seem unfair. Sometimes a room will become free and you may be allowed to use it - but if someone ends up needing it because they're poorly you will be asked to move out again.
who can stay with me?
Most wards for teenagers allow one person to stay with you. This is usually your parent or guardian but can also be a friend or other family member as long as they're older than 16 and are well. Only one person is usually allowed to stay because there is not enough room.
