If you get an infection, you may end up having to go into hospital to have some antibiotics until you feel better. You could end up being in hospital for a week. Contact your local hospital straight away for advice if:

  • Your temperature goes up to 38ºC or higher.
  • You suddenly start to feel ill.

Check out the section on neutropenia and infection for more detailed info.

Sometimes, even if you don’t have an infection, you will need to go to hospital for a blood transfusion or platelet transfusion. This can mean staying for the day or overnight.

You may need to go to your local hospital for a blood transfusion if you get the following symptoms:

  • feeling breathless
  • feeling tired or dizzy
  • pale skin

Or you may need a platelet transfusion if you get these symptoms:

  • nosebleeds
  • bruising
  • purple or red rash

Occasionally you may need to go back to your hospital for some tests or scans in between treatments.
