You are not always going to feel well. You might feel sick or very tired so it's important to rest and take it easy. Remember that 7-10 days after chemo, your district nurse will come and do a blood test on you. The test may show that you have become neutropenic which will make you more likely to catch infections for about a week. When this happens you need to:

  • keep away from crowded places like shopping centres, nightclubs or the cinema.
  • stay away from animals.
  • avoid visiting any sick relatives or having them visit you.
  • watch what you are eating when you are unwell.
  • avoid going swimming (especially if you have a hickman line)

You might also have low levels of platelets so this means you are likely to bleed more than usual if you get hurt. So you should try not to do anything that could cause nasty cuts or that could be dangerous like:

  • riding motorcycles
  • horse riding
  • skateboarding
  • playing rough sports
  • working with sharp tools

If you have a low Hb (anaemia), you'll probably be quite tired and so won't feel up to doing much anyway.
