Very simply, chemo messes up the way cancer cells reproduce themselves. The drugs travel through your blood, which means they can get to the cancer cells wherever they are. Chemo affects healthy cells as well as cancer cells, which is what causes side effects. The big difference is that the damage to healthy cells is temporary and side effects disappear when treatment ends.
