Stem cells are blood cells at their very earliest stage of development. They are made in the bone marrow - the spongy material inside some of the bones. It's mainly found in the
- hip bones (pelvis)
- thigh bone (femur)
- breast bone (sternum)
Stem cells develop into
- red cells that carry oxygen around the body
- white cells that fight infection
- platelets that help the blood to clot and prevent bleeding
