Stem cells are blood cells at their very earliest stage of development. They are made in the bone marrow - the spongy material inside some of the bones. It's mainly found in the

  • hip bones (pelvis)
  • thigh bone (femur)
  • breast bone (sternum)

Stem cells develop into

  • red cells that carry oxygen around the body
  • white cells that fight infection
  • platelets that help the blood to clot and prevent bleeding
