We don't know what causes sarcomas, but research is going on all the time to try and find the answer. It isn't anything that you have done!
Areas that are being looked at are chemicals, as some studies have suggested that people who work with certain chemicals may be at a higher risk of developing sarcomas, also exposure to radiation. But this is only important for older people - when sarcomas occur later in life. In the past, there has been a slightly increased risk of developing a sarcoma if you have had radiotherapy treatment. However with the way that radiotherapy is now given today, the risk is very small.
There are some rare conditions and diseases that run in families (known as genetic conditions), which can increase the chances of a person developing a soft tissue sarcoma.
