Affects: The thyroid gland. It’s more common in girls
than guys

Types: Papillary, follicular, medullary and anaplastic

Causes: Usually unknown, but can be caused by an inherited faulty gene or exposure to radiation

Most common symptoms: A swollen neck, a croaky voice and difficulty breathing

Tests: Ultrasound scan, blood tests and a biopsy

Treatment: Surgery, radioactive iodine and thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
